Halloween: A time to tap into your creative energy

Halloween is an amazing tradition. It's more than just kids trick-or-treating or going to costume parties with your friends. It's also an opportunity to engage your creative energy in new ways. You can use this time to come up with fantastic and intriguing costumes for you and your dog or decorate your home in the spirit of the holiday. But why not also use your creative energy to come up with new and exciting exercise routines? Why not think of how you and your pack can stretch yourselves educationally? Don't just let the creativity begin and end with your costume – carry the energy throughout your life and through your daily routine!

  1. Take a look at your environment with fresh eyes. When I go to someone's home, I like to use the tools available to me there. The staircase can be an exercise area. An old hula-hoop can be part of a makeshift agility course. You can do the same at your home!

  2. Tap into the power of your pack. Get new ideas for activities by asking your friends and family what they like to do with their dogs. Even better, see if you can tag along!

On October 30th at 9pm ET/PT, clients at Shelly Dale's hair salon in Newport Beach, California, are set upon by her French Bulldog Hardy who snaps at strangers when they approach. Shelly and her husband have hired trainers, but nothing seems to keep Hardy's teeth under control. Cesar makes an appointment to take a little off the top and shave off some of Hardy's hairy demeanor.

Our dog Maggie came from a puppy mill and they think she is about 6 years old.  At the first sound of thunder or anything that even sounds like thunder, she has a severe anxiety attack which involves panting, pacing and shaking.  We try to ignore it and act like nothing out of the ordinary is going on.  The puzzling part of the behavior, though, is that every time she starts to scratch frantically at the front door like she wants to go outside in the middle of the storm.  I know she does not actually have to use the bathroom, so it isn't that, and we really can't take her out safely when we have thunder and lightning.  Why does she feel an obsessive need to go outside during the middle of a storm?  I would expect her to want to hide from it, not be out in the middle of it.  It is very confusing to me.

Hi Jen, May I suggest a DAP collar, (Dog appeasing pheromone of the lactating female) soothing, comforting for dogs in stressful situations. Google DAP collars and explore the benefits of engaging the nose. The spray would also possibly be best for Maggie. Spray onto an article of used clothing with your scent...place it in her area...is she crate trained at all...she may be trying to dig a den to hide in. We had a lab with the same reaction years ago, that would go into a dark bathroom and hide in the tub before the storm even erupted. We actually worked a rescue dog through separation anxiety with Cesar's Relax and a DAP collar and spray instead of using drugs. This would possibly help with her blanket sprayed with the Pheromone to soothe, on a piece of your clothing...as Cesar Said in his last VIP Question and Answer session "the sweatier with your scent, the better...even smelly socks can help the dog relax."

Cesar_Recommends

Cesar recommends that you don't give your dog food when he begs at the dinner table. This tip may seem like common sense, but you'd be surprised how few people consider it when they're looking into the wide, wet eyes of their beloved canine companion. That high-pitched whine is an effective tool against you, and your dog knows it. Why? Because it's worked before! Giving food is a form of affection, and giving affection reinforces the behavior preceding it. Your dog has learned that if he begs, he gets food! Take a stand and start a new trend. Find the willpower to withhold that food, and your dog will learn that he can't expect rewards for begging behavior.
